SSAF
Space Seeds for Asian Future (SSAF)
Space Seeds for Asian Future (SSAF) is an international education and research program organized by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) under the Kibo-ABC (Asian Beneficial Collaboration through Kibo Utilization) initiative of the Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF). The program uses the Kibo Japanese Experiment Module aboard the International Space Station (ISS) to engage students and young researchers in space biology and microgravity research.
Objectives
The objectives of SSAF include:
- Providing students with hands-on experience in space science and biology.
- Teaching the principles of designing and conducting experiments in microgravity.
- Promoting international collaboration among Asia-Pacific countries.
- Increasing awareness and utilization of the ISS Kibo module for scientific research.
Program Overview
The SSAF program generally follows these steps:
- Selection of plant seeds or other biological samples.
- Transportation of selected samples to the ISS aboard a cargo spacecraft.
- Storage or cultivation of the samples in the Kibo module by astronauts.
- Return of the samples to Earth.
- Comparative analysis by students and researchers between space-exposed and ground-control samples.
Participants study the effects of the space environment, including microgravity and cosmic radiation, on plant growth, germination, and genetic characteristics.
Major Projects
SSAF 2010–2011
The inaugural Space Seeds for Asian Future project distributed seeds that had traveled aboard the ISS to students and educational institutions across Asia for germination and scientific observation.
SSAF 2013
The second project expanded participation and included indigenous plant species from multiple Asian countries. Astronauts cultivated selected seeds aboard the ISS, allowing students to compare space-grown and Earth-grown plants.
Asian Herb in Space (AHiS)
The third SSAF project, conducted during 2020–2021, focused on herbs such as basil. The program combined ISS experiments with classroom educational activities and international collaboration among participating countries.
